Site Type/Program: Marine Corps MMRP

Location: MCAGCC Twentynine Palms is located in the southern Mojave Desert approximately 60 miles northwest from Palm Springs. The Combat Center occupies 932 square miles, or 596,000 acres which is 3/4 the size of the state of Rhode Island.

Brief History: The history of military use of the area dates to 1940 when the Army used the area for training glider crews. When glider training ended in 1943, the Army switched to training fighter pilots. At the end of World War II the Navy used the area as a bombing range until 1945 when it was transferred to San Bernardino County, California. In 1952 the Marine Corps took charge and was designated Headquarters Marine Corps Training Center and in 1957 it was commissioned as a Marine Corps Base. In 1979 the base was re-named the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms.
Range / Site Description: MCAGCC Twentynine Palms occupies 932 square miles, or 596,000 acres of the southern Mojave Desert. The Range Complex encompasses: 700 square miles of land area and 1,267 square nm of airspace. To support the CAX, the range complex provides 22 fixed, numb

Associated Munitions: The MCAGC Twentynine Palms deploys well over $100M worth munitions per year in training exercises alone. Just about every type of ground and air dropped ordnance in the Marine Corps, Army and Air Force inventory is deployed at the installation.

Activities Completed: Twentynine Palms has a continuous range clearance / range clearance activities on-going and has a robust munitions debris processing center to process range debris for recycling purposes.

Other Information: Virtually the entire installation is considered an operational training range. The installation does not have any MMRP sites associated with it.
