UXO Site selected: Williams Field Range #15, AZ

Location: The former Williams Field Bomb Target Range #15 is located approximately 24 miles south of Casa Grande, Arizona in Pinal County. The site consisted of 640 acres and is located in Section 35, Township 10 South, Range 7 East. The site is desert land used for cattle grazing. There are no structures within 2 miles of the target.

Brief History: This site was acquired from the DOI by a use permit dated 7 April 1942. The site was intended for use as a practice bombing range in support of Williams Field in Higley, Arizona. Historical documents indicate that subsequent to the selection of this site as a practice bombing target and prior to construction, it was determined that operations at the Marana Flying School made this bomb target unusable. According to historical documents, this site was never used for its intended purpose. This site was relinquished to the DOI on 10 October 1945 and retransferred to the DOI on 21 December 1945. The site is currently owned by the State of Arizona and leased for cattle grazing.

Activities Completed: The Archives Search Report (ASR) for Williams Field Bomb Target Range #15 was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, in June 1998.

Issues: The Huntsville Center Technical Advisory Group met and discussed this ASR on 12 January 1999 and determined NOFA for this site.
