UXO Site selected: MULLET KEY BOMBING AND GUNNERY RANGE, FL

Location: The 842 acre area known as Mullet Key is located 5 miles south of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Brief History:

The military history of Mullet Key dates back to 1849 when much of the area was reserved from the public domain for defensive purposes during the Civil War. In 1900, Fort De Soto was established at the site. Between 1899 and 1938, approximately 720 acres of the site were transferred from the War Department to various federal agencies with the remaining area staying under the jurisdiction of the War Department.



Range / Site Description:

The area of Mullet Key is now a public park operated by Pineallas County. There are two MRSs associated with the FUDS property - Range Complex No. 1 and Range Complex No. 2.



Associated Munitions: 250-pound general purposes bombs; 100-pound bombs; 37 millimeter (mm) and 3-inch projectiles; and 1.457-inch target practice sub-caliber and 12-inch projectiles.

Activities Completed: Several munitions response actions have occurred at Mullet Key over the years including an Inventory Project Report prepared in 1991; an archive search report prepared in 1994; a supplement to the archive search report prepared in 2004; and an MMRP SI conducted in 2008.
