Location: The former Chaffee Bomb Target included 435.45 acres of land located due east of the Naval Air Station (NAS) Cecil Field Gunnery Range in Section 36, Township 2S, Range 24E, southeast quarter, Marietta, Duval County, Florida. The site is reached by turning north from Normandy Boulevard onto Chaffee Road and turning left at the entrance to West Meadows Golf Club. The land is currently owned by several persons and utilized as a golf course and for timber cultivation, grazing, and residential areas.

Brief History: The Navy acquired 435.45 acres of land in fee by condemnation for use as a bomb target site. The site was developed and named the Chaffee Bomb Target Site. The Navy constructed a concrete block building, security fencing and a shell circle. The site was used as a bomb target by the Navy from 1942-1947. The Navy declared the entire site, consisting of 435.45 acres of fee land, excess to the General Services Administration (GSA) on 1 November 1951. On 17 June 1952, GSA transferred the land to the Federal Security Agency. The Federal Security Administrator sold the property to the Duval County Board of Public Instruction by quit claim deed dated 24 July 1952. The property was conveyed with the recognition on behalf of the Duval County Board of Education that the site has been contaminated by bombs or other explosives and that the United States could not certify that the site had been totally and completely decontaminated.

Activities Completed: The Archives Search Report for the former Chaffee Bomb Target Site was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, in April 1994.

Issues: The CEHNC Technical Advisory Group (TAG) recommended a strategy of EE/CA, RAC 3. No ordnance and explosives (OE) was found during the visit by the site survey team and there is no record of OE being found on site within at least the last five years.
