Location: The former H. Smart Field was located in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia approximately two miles east of Macon, Georgia. It was comprised of approximately 390 acres of leased land and was utilized by the U.S. Army Air Force as a training area. After the war, the field again became a commercial airport.

Brief History: The H. Smart Airport was a result of President Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration and its effort to revive a troubled economy. In 1941, army headquarters was established in a tent at the airport, then called Macon's Municipal Airport. On January 7, 1942, the airport was turned over to the government. The government constructed a hanger, office quarters, mess hall, power and light systems and paving improvements. The first troops were those of the 4th Air Depot in l941. H. Smart then became a chemical troop training center. During one period, 25 Air Operations companies arrived at H. Smart. The height of troop strength was 3200 men. The purpose of the base through 1943 was to train troops in chemical warfare The purpose of the base through 1943 was to train troops in chemical warfare with reference to air operations activities. Chemical training continued until May l944. The troops trained with carbines, anti-tank grenades, spray tanks, trucks, and chemical trailers, and identification sets. Other items used in training included smoke pots and tear gas. The base received drums of riot control/tear gas, FS (screening smoke), filling lines, M-10 and M-33 tanks, holding stands, and chemical trucks and trailers.
