UXO Site selected: Camp Desert Rock, NV

Location: The former Camp Desert Rock is located in Nye County, southwest of Mercury, Nevada.

Brief History: The site was acquired from the Department of the Interior as part of a 4,043,339.55 tract specified in Executive Order 8578, 29 October 1940, for use as a bombing and gunnery range. 733,418.44 acres were relinquished to the Atomic Energy Commission by Presidential order in 1950. The site was used for billeting troops and storage of equipment incidental to atomic battlefield maneuvers conducted in conjunction with the atomic weapons testing program. With the suspension of aboveground testing in 1957, the camp was discontinued as a sub-installation in 1965. A portion of the site is owned by the Department of Energy, which uses the property for environmental research an airstrip and as a buffer zone between the Nevada Test Site and Highway 95.

Associated Munitions: Practice landmines were discovered there during the ASR. Other OE are suspected to be there as well.
