Location: The Pantex site is located in Carson County, Texas, approximately 15 miles northeast of Amarillo on U.S. Highway 60. The site is bounded by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroads and U.S. 67 to the south, farm market to the east, the Pantex Plant to the north and FM 683 to the west.

Brief History: Texas Tech University leases acreage to the U.S. Department of Energy and grazes cattle over the area. During 1994, approximately 1,154 acres were subleased to four co-operators for production of wheat and milo. The site is located within the security buffer zone for the Pantex nuclear weapons plant; therefore access to this property is extremely restricted. None of the areas in the site are located within the boundaries of the currently operating Department of Energy owned Pantex Plant.

Activities Completed: An Inventory Project Report (INPR) dated December 21, 1990, identified potential OE as being eligible for cleanup under the FUDS. An interim removal action was conducted in 1992 - 1993 in areas 5, 6, and 7.Approximately 47 OE items were discovered.

Other Information: The final action memorandum was forwarded to Tulsa District in April 1996. As of November 1996, the local Commander had not signed the action memo. Coordination with the Tulsa District indicated that an agency within the State of Texas is disputing the deed restriction clauses in the memorandum. CEHNC counsel has recommended that a public notice advertising the action memorandum and the administrative record in the County Courthouse would resolve the issue. Our action is complete. The contract is pending closeout.
