Brief History:

1941 Camp Chaffee was established for armored divisions under direction of the War Department to provide a training facility. The installation consists of approximately 76,482 acres.

November 1942 to May 1946 Camp Chaffee was used as a prisoner-of-war camp and deactivated after WWII.

May 1950 Camp Chaffee was reactivated during the Korean Conflict to provide basic and advanced field artillery training.

21 March 1956 The Secretary of the Army, by General Order, redesignated Camp Chaffee as Fort Chaffee. The current mission of Fort Chaffee is to provide facilities and support training operations for the National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve Units, Navy and Marine Reservists, Air National Guard, and the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

1979 An unknown amount of 4.2-inch mortars were discovered at Fort Chaffee.

Post-WWII Camp Chaffee was used in the mid-1940s to train troops in chemical warfare operations.



Range / Site Description:

The installation is a Arknsas Army National Guard facility.

CWM Burial Sites include "Dug Well" - a 30 sq foot area used in the mid-1940s to train troops in chemical warfare operations. The area was identifed on maps as the "gassed area". The hand dug well was reportedly used to dispose of chemical agent identification sets.
