Brief History:

Prior to 1981 No record existed indicating manufacture, storage, use, or disposal of chemical agents or munitions at Fort Polk.

1981 One suspect chemical 4.2-inch mortar was recovered and was destroyed.

1985 Three suspect chemical 4.2-inch mortars were recovered and transported to Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA).

June 1987 The chemical agent burial site at Range 23-A was excavated and CWM was recovered.

1995 A CAIS vial was recovered during remediation sampling. The vial was assessed at APG, Edgewood to contain lewisite and was destroyed.

1996 A CAIS vial was recovered from the Fort Polk Golf Course. The vial was assessed and destroyed. Also, a 4.2-inch suspect mortar was recovered in a current training area and destroyed.



Range / Site Description:

Fort Polk is the home of the Joint Readiness Training Center. Its mission is to provide advanced-level joint training for Army and Air Force contingency forces under conditions that simulate those of real low- and mid-intensity conflicts throughout the world. Several projects have been identified for environmental restoration, including open burning/open detonation grounds and wastewater lagoons.
