Brief History: The 1978 Navy EOD survey indicated that the ordnance disposed of at the site ranged in size from 0.30-caliber bullets to 500-pound aerial bombs. The ammunition dump at Camel Rock was the result of a post invasion cleanup of ordnance. According to the 1978 study, the U.S. Navy gathered the ordnance, sealed them in tar, loaded the tar sealed ordnance into crates, and then dumped the crates into the ocean near Camel Rock. The 1978 report stated that the general physical condition of the ordnance was poor, and that the extent of coral growth on most items was heavy enough to preclude all but a cursory identification.

Range / Site Description: Following World War II, an estimated 64 tons of unexploded Japanese and American ordnance were disposed of into the waters off Camel Rock in Asan Bay, Guam. The total area of the ABU is 554 acres, of which 109 are land acres and 445 are offshore acres. The site is within the War in the Pacific National Historic Park (WPNHP) which includes all lands on the ocean side of Marine Drive between and including Adelup and Asan Point.

Associated Munitions: WWII Era Japanese and US munitions -- estimated at 64tons - ordnance disposed of at the site ranged in size from 0.30-caliber bullets to 500-pound aerial bombs.

Activities Completed: Three studies have been undertaken in the past related to the underwater munitions sea disposal site at ABU: a survey by U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) in 1978; a Preliminary Assessment (PA) in December 2003; and a Survey of Submerged Ordnance in February 2006.

Issues: The site is being addressed by the National Parks Service as a potential Superfund Site.
