Emergency Closure Notice of Public Lands on Fort Ord

Fort Ord, California the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a Notice of Emergency Closure of Selected Public Lands to the Establishment of new "Geocaches". The driver behind the emergency closure notice is to limit the public's exposure to UXO at the installation and to reduce off-trail use that can have considerable adverse effects on the environment.

BLM officials are also considering removing the existing Geocaches (estimated to be around 60) currently at Fort Ord. With most of them located away from the existing trails, their presence encourages unauthorized trespassing into areas potentially containing UXO. The BLM estimates that hundreds of recreational visitors are attracted to Fort Ord each month due to the existing Geocaches.

A public notice was issued at Fort Ord and also published in the Federal Register. To view the notice that was published in the Federal Register, use the download link below.

Note - Geocatching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a GPS receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "Geocaches" or "Caches").
