Explosive Charge Missing After Failing to Detonate

San Diego, California Navy EOD divers are searching the waters and nearby beaches off the Navy's Silver Strand Training Facility just south of Coronado for a missing explosive charge. The underwater explosive charge, which contains C4, was initially attached to a simulated underwater sea mine during a Navy EOD training exercise.

When the EOD divers attempted to initiate the charge, it failed to detonate as designed. After waiting the required safety period, the dive team went back to the area where the charge was initially placed and discovered that the explosive charge itself was missing.

When a search of the immediate area turned up no sign of the explosive charge, the Navy expanded their efforts to include an extensive search of the nearby waters by boat and a search of the nearby beaches. The Navy has notified local authorities about the missing explosive charge and is asking the public to call 911 if they find anything suspicious on the beaches.
