Army to Destroy CWM Munitions Uncovered From Training Range
Oahu' Hawaii The Army plans to spend the next three weeks disposing of 71 WWI and WWII era CWM filled chemical rounds uncovered at Schofield Barracks. The rounds were uncovered between June 2004 and September 2006 when a training range was being cleared for use by the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The destruction will take place in a portable detonation chamber in a remote area at Schofield Barracks near the training facility known as the "Grenade House".
The portable blast chamber will be operated by a 30 person team including personnel from Edgewood Chemical Biological Center in Maryland. The 71 WWI and War II-era CWM munitions that will be destroyed include:
- 4-inch chloropicrin filled mortar: Qty 1
- 4-inch phosgene mortars: Qty 10
- 155 mm phosgene projectiles: Qty 38
- 75 mm phosgene projectiles: Qty 22
The resulting fragmentation from the disposal shots will be collected from the chamber and shipped to a facility in Washington State where it will be cleaned and properly disposed of.
