Warnings Issued after Illumination Flare Fails to Function
Trenton, Ontario Trenton's Transport and Rescue Squadron fired a series of illumination flares in support of the search for a missing 2-year-old toddler who wondered off the family farm. Unfortunately, one of the flares failed to function after being deployed from the aircraft. As a result, Canadian Military officials from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton issued a series of public warnings to residents of Wollaston Township over the potential for an unexploded flare. Residents were warned to stay clear of any unknown metallic objects found and were told to report any finds to the local authorities.
The young girl was eventually found almost 2-miles from the family farm with the help from search dogs that were used in the intensive ground search. Although it was the search dogs who found the young girl, it was the family collie named Shilo who was praised with saving the young girl's life. Shilo reportedly wrapped herself around the girl as she rested keeping her warm throughout the long ordeal. Shilo was scared off by the search dogs but eventually made her way home the following day.
A team from CFB Trenton was also dispatched to search for the unexpended flare but so far have not been able to locate the flare.
