Munitions Found at Metal Recycling Facility

Sturgis, Michigan Workers from Sturgis Iron and Metal called authorities when they found three artillery projectiles and one 16-inch Naval gun round. The Sturgis Police and Fire Departments and the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad all responded to the munitions finds. The civilian authorities also requested support from the Army EOD unit based out of Fort Campbell Kentucky to identify and dispose of the ordnance.

The artillery projectiles were identified as 155mm rounds. Two of the 155mm rounds were identified as inert, the third was identified as a live round which was disposed of through open detonation. The status of the 16 inch round was not reported.

Nearby residential homes were evacuated as a safety precaution during the open detonation disposal operation. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the source of the rounds and to figure out how they ended up at the recycling facility.
