Man Transports Munition To a Nearby Government Facility

White City, Oregon a man found an old mortar round on his property and rather than calling the police to report the find, he decided to transport the munition to a nearby Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Rehabilitation Center. According to a public affairs specialist from the facility, the man assumed because the facility was a Government facility that they would be able to deal with the munition.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded and evacuated the area including four nearby buildings before Oregon State Police bomb squad personnel moved the munition into a blast-proof transport container. The munition was identified as a practice WWII era mortar round (specific size of nomenclature not reported). The round was safely transported off-site and the area was reopened.

The man who transported the munition will most likely not face criminal charges, as there was no evidence to suggest that the man had any terrorist or criminal intentions.
