UXO Found on Construction Site Detonation at Sea

Southhampton, United Kingdom A crew working on the London Road construction project discovered a UXO item buried at the site. The crew called the police who responded with technical support by a Royal Engineer unit. The area around the construction site was safely evacuated and secured. The UXO identified as a WWII era German 45-kg bomb (shown in the image below) was safely transported about 10 miles to Solent after it was safely uncovered.

The move to Solent occurred in the early morning hours when traffic was light to minimize disruptions to commuters. At Solent, a British Navy EOD team took over and transported the bomb out to sea where it was safely detonated in approximately 60 feet of water. Conducting the dispose operation off-shore minimized the impact to residents and businesses in Solent as the water tamped the blast and fragmentation effects of the explosion.
