3 Bomb Technicians Killed During Render Safe Operation

Goettingen, Germany Construction workers building a sports stadium came across a large bomb buried nearly 18 feet below the ground surface. The construction workers ceased operations and called the police who responded and evacuated nearly 7,000 residents from the surrounding area. A team of experienced military engineers was called in to handle the UXO identified as a WWII era 500kg bomb.

Reportedly, just before a render safe operation was set to commence, the bomb unexpectedly exploded killing three of the technicians and injuring six others. The 3 who died ranged in age from 38 to 55 who were all reportedly experienced in defusing bombs. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion.
