Bomb Found in Creek bed Near Residential Neighborhood
Ranlo, North Carolina A man searching for scrap metal in a dry creek bed in the woods near a residential neighborhood found a 500-pound bomb. The man called the police to report the find. Ranlo police responded and decided to use a backhoe to relocate the bomb to an open area where it could be investigated further. The police then called the Army for technical support.
Fort Bragg provided technical assistance and determined that the bomb was not live. Interviews with local residents suggested that children often played around the woods. Reports of other munition like items in the area also surfaced but subsequent searches of the area did not result in any additional finds.
Authorities suspect that the bomb may have come from an old munitions plant in the area that reportedly manufactured munitions casings and also parts for the Nike missile systems.
