Schonstedt Instrument Company has shipped 36 donated magnetic locators to members of the Joint Mine Action Coordination Team - Libya (JMACT). The JMACT is a partnership of the United Nations and international NGOs, formed to present a coordinated mine action response to the explosive remnants of war (ERW) threat in that country.
Fighting in Libya since February 2011 has led to significant ERW contamination that threatens to increase the number of deaths and injuries of civilians and aid workers as well as jeopardize the delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid.
Wharton, New Jersey A worker at the Tilcon quarry and recycling plant on Mount Hope Road reported a munition stuck in the magnet of a crusher. Following proper protocol, the Operations Manager evacuated employees and called Authorities. Picatinny Arsenal dispatched an EOD team to remove the munition from the magnet. EOD safely removed the munition (type not reported) and the facility was re-opened.
Finding munitions at the facility is a fairly common occurrence as quarry is within the area impacted by the 1926 explosion of a munitions storage magazine which scattered munitions for several miles. Over the years, munitions removal actions have been done within the quarry area resulting in munitions debris and UXO findings. Obviously, this recent find is evidence that the potential for munitions still exist at the site.
Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands Tinian Mayor Ramon Dela Cruz has requested assistance from Governor Fitial, as president of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Military Integration Management Committee to petition the Navy to close Tinian's Mortar Range in hopes of obtaining MMRP dollars for cleanup.
The Mortar Range is covered in a lease that dates back to 1983 which was based on a Covenant signed in 1975. Under the lease agreement, Tinian is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the roadways and mowing of grasslands for the military. Concerns over the cost of the upkeep and maintenance coupled with the fact that the Navy reportedly does not anticipate using the range in the future, have prompted requests for the Navy to initiate closure of the range. Closure of the range would make the site eligible for MMRP funds which would cover the cost of cleanup based upon risk at the site.
Eagle, Alaska A local resident found an old cannon ball on their property and called Authorities to report the find. Alaska State Troopers and the National Park Service responded. Concerned that the cannonball may be live, the EOD unit from Eielson Air Force Base 350-miles away was called for support.
Denver, Colorado Firefighters responded to an early morning call of smoke coming from an auditorium on the University Of Denver campus. The smoke was tracked to Professor Cobb's engineering research laboratory adjacent to the auditorium. The smoke was coming from an oven which firefighters found to be loaded with artillery shells. As a precaution, the bomb squad was called out and nearby buildings were evacuated.
Quito, Ecuador 14 people including nine police officers and five civilians were injured when stored gunpowder unexpectedly exploded. The gunpowder was being stored at a police rescue unit headquarters. The explosion also caused damage to nearby buildings including a school. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. No details were available on the amount or type of gunpowder being stored or whether or not other munitions and/or energetic material was involved. Reportedly four of the five civilians injured were children.
A UXO Technician deployed in an undisclosed international location took pictures of the following munition items while deployed on assignment. They appear to be Chinese Type 84 scatterable mines but second opinions are being sought as well as any additional technical specifications on the munitions.
