EPA Settles with Waste Explosives Disposal Company

Lenexa, Kansas General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems - Munitions Services has agreed to pay $580,135 to settle alleged violations involving the disposal of wastes including explosives wastes at its Joplin- area facility in southwest Missouri. The alleged EPA violations include operating a thermal treatment unit incinerator without a valid permit and exceeding emission limits for several types of toxins. The company has reportedly updated their operations and incinerator as a result of the alleged violations.

Ground Breaking Held For Expanded EOD School

Eglin AFB, Florida A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Naval School EOD to mark the start of a construction project to expand the school's infrastructure. The school has long outgrown its three buildings as it now trains over 2,000 students per year from all Services (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force).

The school currently uses trailers and has also turned the dining hall into a part-time classroom to accommodate EOD training. The $21M project will add two new buildings and expand the dining hall to the school. The new buildings will add 15 classrooms and provide state-of-the-art technology and security.

Crash Involving Trucks Transporting Ordnance Shuts Down Highway

Valley County, Montana A Maelstrom Air Force Base EOD team was called to the scene of a crash involving two semitrailers which closed Highway 2 in Valley County for more than 12 hours. The clean up was complicated by the fact that one of the semis was carrying unidentified military ordnance. Traffic was detoured around a one-mile safety zone. No serious injuries were reported.

Removal Action Underway For Improperly Stored Explosives

Doyline, Louisiana The State Fire Marshalls Office and ATF investigators are overseeing the removal of explosives from a property leased by Explo Systems, the site where an above-ground storage magazine exploded in October. The removal action includes over 1 million pounds of powder that were found to be improperly stored during a recent safety inspection.

Reportedly, the safety inspection found that the powder was being stored outside in cardboard boxes on wooden pallets instead of inside an ATF approved magazine. Nearby residents and business have been evacuated and the local school closed as State police and Explo employees carry out the task of relocating the explosives. The powder is reportedly being moved to storage bunkers at the Camp Minden industrial site.
