Munitions Training Starts Fire

San Diego, California A brush fire that started on one of Camp Pendleton's active training ranges has burned more than 200 acres and is moving northeast toward the installation. The cause of the fire was reportedly linked to munitions training (munition type involved not reported).

Crews are fighting the fire from the sky with fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter due to concerns over UXO in the area. Efforts are underway to contain the fire. So far, no structures have been damaged .

Marine Flare Washes Ashore

Sodus Point, New York a local resident found a marine flare that had washed ashore near the Old Sodus Bay Lighthouse. The flare had a warning label stenciled on the body advising anyone that found the item to contact military and police officials. The resident phoned the police who responded with technical support provided by the Fort Drum EOD team.

Grenade Found in Creek Clean Up

Stamford, Connecticut A volunteer participating in the cleanup of the Mill River found an old hand grenade in the mud. The volunteer reportedly thought the item was a broken bottle covered in mud. The police were called who responded with the local bomb squad. The bomb squad safely disposed of the grenade shown below.

Landmine Recovered from Army Installation

Fort Meade, Maryland A WWII era landmine was recovered during a remediation project at the Manor View dump site. UXO support was on-site but since it was a landmine, the EOD unit from Aberdeen Proving Grounds was called to respond. EOD identified the landmine (shown below) as a WWII era anti-personnel landmine.

WWII Era Sea Mine Found During NATO Patrol

Sardinia, Italy The British mine hunting ship HMS Ledbury was on patrol as part of a NATO task force when its sonar picked up a target on the sea floor just off the coast from Cagliari. An ROV was dispatched to investigate the target. When the video image came back of the find, the sailors had trouble at first identifying the target due to an excessive amount of sea growth. A decision was made to dispatch divers to manually investigate the target.

Qualifications:

  1. For individuals who possess a certificate from Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD), must have 4 years as an EOD Technician or comparable military experience; or for individuals who do not possess a certificate from NAVSCOLEOD, must have 7 years applicable experience, 4 of which are loading, assembling and packing ammunition or comparable military experience.
  2. Must possess a Class C CDL endorsed for HAZMAT and air brakes within 6 months of employment.
  3. Must possess, within 9 months of employment, (a) an Ammunition Certification Level III in accordance with ATC Regulation 350-8, and (b) an Explosive Test Operator Certification in accordance with ATC Regulation 350-7. ATC's Ammunition Certification Authority may extend the time limit when organizational requirements hinder the certification process.
  4. Must possess a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certificate within 6 months of employment.
  5. Must possess a Forklift License within 6 months of employment.
  6. At least 2 persons shall possess a certification from either National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) or Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to include: basic open water self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA); advanced open water SCUBA; deep diving; and rescue diver.
  7. Must possess a clearance for unaccompanied access to Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives (AA&E) within 6 months of employment. ATC's Ammunition Certification Authority (ACA) may extend this time limit for individual cases where the ACA finds that a delay in the clearance process is not the responsibility of the applicant.

EOD Responds To UXO Found Along Beach

Cumbria, England A fisherman walking along a beach near an old range found a UXO that reportedly washed ashore. The man notified the police who responded with the Coastguard. The police and Coastguard secured the area and called the Navy who dispatched a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit to respond.

Three Missing From Explosion at Munitions Depot

Sofia, Bulgaria A series of explosion occurred at a munitions storage depot owned by a private contractor. The cause of the explosion is unknown but reports indicate that 21 workers were present at the facility at the time of the blast. Of the 21, 18 were found with half of them reportedly injured. A search is underway for the three missing workers. The explosions left a large crater in the area where a workshop once stood. Local authorities have diverted traffic from a major highway located near the facility. The explosions also caused several large fires which have hampered search efforts.
