Jogger Finds Mortar During Run Through A Residential Area
Colorado Springs, Colorado A jogger running in a residential area discovered a mortar round near a wooded area in the Meridian Estates subdivision. The jogger called the police to report the find. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded with the Colorado Springs Bomb squad.
The police evacuated nearby residents as the bomb squad personnel inspected the item. Since the mortar round was a military munition, the bomb squad called the Army at Fort Carson for additional support. Army EOD identified the munitions as an inert 81mm training round and removed the item from area.
An investigation is underway to determine how the munition item ended up in a residential area. Authorities plan to trace the lot number of the item to determine the origin of the device.
