Engineer Takes Live Munition for a Joy Ride
Lepton, West Yorkshire When Engineer Steve Grierson discovered a 40mm shell with his metal detector at Storthes Hall, Kirkburton, he wrapped the wartime munition in a blanket and loaded it into the bed of his truck. Ten miles in to his drive home, he began to have second thoughts. He pulled over in Lepton to take another look at it.
It was then he discovered the shell had a percussion cap, signaling to Grierson that the bomb was live. He called police and bomb squad experts raced 70 miles from Catterick Garrison to Knotty Lane, Lepton, to carry out a controlled explosion in a nearby field.
