Man Finds Live Shell Near Community Garden

McClellan, Georgia Fort Benning EOD responded to the call of a live artillery shell lying in a creek. A man encountered the munition while wading in the creek near a community garden.

Police cordoned off the area while the two-man EOD team removed the WWII-era 75mm shrapnel round from the area. The round was safely transported to Pelham Range for disposal.

Live Shell

The creek where the shell was found is near the Cane Creek Outdoor Classroom where hundreds of area students spend time to commemorate Earth Day each year. The area is an old military fort and citizens are reminded to remember the three R's -- recognize, retreat and report when visiting.

The man who discovered the UXO reportedly practiced safe measures by not touching or going close to the item. Instead, he photographed the item from a distance and reported the find to authorities.
