EOD Dispose of UXO Found in New Zealand Harbor
Wellington Harbour, New Zealand A fuze was discovered in the waters off Oriental Bay by volunteer divers cleaning up Wellington Harbour. The diver who discovered the item and at first thought it might make a good display piece for a mantelpiece until a historian confirmed it was a WWII fuze that was potentially live.
The dive team then notified New Zealand military to report the find. A New Zealand EOD team responded and conducted a controlled detonation to eliminate the hazard. Following the EOD response, a Defence spokesperson issued the following warning, "Unexploded ordnance come from a range of sources. While many items of this nature are found to be inert, it is critically important to assume they are dangerous until proven otherwise by experts. If you discover an item that you believe may be dangerous, remain clear of the item and contact NZ Police as soon as possible."
