Walker Discovers Anti-tank Round on One of the Channel Islands
Jersey, United Kingdom Islander Mike Beaugeard received "quite a surprise" while on a walk at Egypt, Trinity on the Channel Islands. Nestled in the grass along the path was an anti-tank shell. He said that the munition was about four or five inches wide and around ten inches long.
Beaugeard reported the find to the honorary police, who contacted bomb disposal. He said, "It's a steep path but out of the corner of my eye I spotted it on the side of a grass verge. It was quite a surprise, but the right people dealt with it. It makes you wonder how many are in the area. The frightening thing was that it was in plain sight."
The live munition was removed for safe disposal. The find occurred just weeks after the Jersey Coastguard organized the safe disposal of another UXO on the east coast. A government website said that such discoveries are "not unusual" given the occupation of the Channel Islands during WWII.
