WWII UXO Discovered in West Virginia National Forest
Davis, West Virginia An unexploded ordnance found at Dolly Sods in the Monongahela National Forest was safely disposed of by West Virginia State Police, according to an alert put out by the Forest Service.
The suspected UXO was reported by a member of the public, and Forest Service officials confirmed the location and size of the item. First responders from Tucker and Grant counties and the West Virginia State Police responded to dispose of it.
The Forest Service is now reminding people that Dolly Sods was used as a WWII military training ground. Despite cleanup efforts, "unexploded artillery and mortar shells" may still be in the area.
They also issued the following guidelines if suspected munitions are discovered:
Do not touch, move, or dig near or around suspected ordnance.Back away in the direction you came
Mark or note the location using GPS coordinates, a map, or nearby landmarks
Report the description and location immediately by calling 1-888-283-0303 (available 24 hours).
