Massive Cache of Medieval Munitions Discovered
Nieuwpoort, Belgium Archaeologists recently uncovered hundreds of medieval munitions at a construction site in Belgium. According to a press release from the city, approximately 450 cannonballs dating back to as early as 1350 A.D., were uncovered during construction of an administrative center in Nieuwpoort.
"Their high degree of standardization and quality finishing suggests they were more likely intended for firearms, notably, the variation in sizes points to a highly diverse arsenal," the statement said.
It is striking to find so many in one area. The find may lead to significant historical revelations about the area as they are studied for a report which could take up to two years to complete according to officials.
"For now, the archaeologists have taken the cannonballs with them for further examination," said Alexander Doucet, a fieldwork coordinator at the archaeological firm Group Van Vooren.
"After this is completed, the owner of the cannonballs, the city of Nieuwpoort, can decide what to do with them. The archaeologists are going to make recommendations that the balls be displayed as a whole."
