Canadian Government Reaches Settlement for Former Goose Lake Range
Vernon, British Columbia members of the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) formally approved a settlement Agreement with the Canadian federal government regarding UXO resulting from historical military training on band lands.
The agreement, which includes an interim financial plan for the settlement funds, passed with over 70 percent approval from the community. While the specific financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed, the Agreement officially paves the way for dedicated UXO clearance operations.
The contamination stems from the federal government's use of the Goose Lake Range for military training exercises during WWI and WWII. With the settlement finalized, the next steps will focus on organizing the physical UXO clearance, community engagement, and veteran commemoration.
