Grandpa's Grenades Must Go!
Thousand Oaks, California The Ventura County Sheriff's Office bomb squad and U.S. Navy EOD responded to home in in Thousand Oaks after a cache of century-old grenades and other explosives were found.
The bomb squad reported, "A family was organizing the belongings of their late grandfather who served in WWII and came across a cache of authentic Japanese, British, and American grenades along with other ordnance dating back nearly a century."
Despite the historical significance of the relics, the munitions were deemed unsafe and removed for safe disposal by EOD. "Although an attempt was made, some of these items still contained possible explosive hazards," the sheriff's office said.
Residents were reminded to always leave potential explosives in place, evacuate, and call 911. "A simple untrained look is often not enough to distinguish inert military memorabilia from live munitions," the sheriff's office said. "It's always better to be safe than sorry."
