Controlled Detonation Chamber Advancements

Huntsville, Alabama Redstone Arsenal is set to receive its first permanent ordnance destruction facility. Spearheaded by the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, the Prototype Recovered Ordnance Destruction System (PRODS) will thermally destroy recovered munitions, significantly accelerating ongoing clearance operations at the installation.

By integrating a static detonation chamber with an advanced off-gas treatment system, PRODS aims to safely dispose of munitions and related materials without the need for open detonation leaving behind only safe scrap metal for recycling or standard disposal.

Historically, Redstone Arsenal has relied on lower-capacity, portable disposal units, creating potential bottlenecks. The permanent, high-throughput capability of PRODS is expected to increase disposal speeds by up to 75%, ensuring UXO recovery efforts are not hindered by storage limitations and backlog.

While designated as a prototype, PRODS heavily incorporates proven technologies. Engineers are actively repurposing critical static detonation chamber components previously utilized in Pueblo, Colorado, alongside systems successfully fielded at the Blue Grass Army Depot. This strategic reuse of equipment, combined with an expedited funding approach through an Other Transaction Authority agreement, saved the Army an estimated $50 million and advanced the project timeline by up to three and a half years compared to traditional procurement methods.

Upon completion of construction, the facility, which features a dedicated control room, robust ventilation controls, and extensive worker safety systems, will be transferred to the Redstone Garrison's Directorate of Public Works. The Huntsville Center will continue to provide critical technical support during the system's testing and long-term operation.
