Navy and State Police Respond to Multiple WWII Projectiles

Orleans, Massachusetts Local authorities secured the public beach at Rock Harbor following the discovery of multiple pieces of suspected UXO. In total, five objects were located: one resting on the beach and four submerged on the tidal flats near the edge of the harbor entrance channel.

A Massachusetts State Police bomb squad responded to the scene and identified the item on the shoreline as a WWII-era projectile. Heavy marine growth obscured the munition's identity. A U.S. Navy EOD team from Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island was mobilized to assist with the recovery. EOD personnel transported the recovered UXO to a secure, remote location. The team then successfully destroyed the hazards via a controlled detonation.
