Description:
Use:
The Mk 82 (modified) bomb and the BDU-50/B bomb are inert loaded practice bombs used for load crew training and pilot delivery techniques. These bombs do not accommodate fuzes or spotting charges. The Mk 82 (modified) and the BDU-50/B bombs are painted blue with white markings. The Mk 82 (modified) bomb has a welded nose plate and the BDU-50/B bomb has a threaded nose with a plastic plug installed. The aft end of the Mk 82 (modified) bomb is closed with a removable tail plate for filling operations and the BDU-50/B bomb is closed with a base plate, neither of which contain a threaded fuze well.
Functioning:
Depending on the fuze(s) or the spotting charge adapter used, the arming wire assembly lanyard, or cable, is connected to the aircraft bomb rack or pylon. As the bomb is released from the aircraft, the fuze arming sequence begins; after a predetermined time, the fuze or spotting charge adapter is armed. Upon impact, the fuze or spotting charge adapter functions, initiating the spotting charge or signal cartridge. If the bomb does not contain a spotting charge, fuze(s), or spotting charge adapter with a signal cartridge, there is no arming wire(s), lanyard(s), or cable to be pulled. When the bomb is released from the aircraft, it travels a ballistic trajectory to the target and impacts without providing a visual indication point.
