Description: |

The World War I 40 pound incendiary bomb was also known as a "scatter" bomb. It came in several modifications depending on the filler used. The first modification contained cotton waste balls, 2.5 inches in diameter weighing 2.5 ounces. These were tied with twine and soaked in a special oil mixture which included carbon disulfide plus crude turpentine; or carbon disulfide, benzene plus crude kerosene. Solid oil was also tried, and later models contained termite mixtures. |
