Concrete Contractor Comes Into Contact With MPPEH |
Orange County, Florida - A contractor preparing an area for new concrete on the grounds of Odyssey Middle School where the USACE is actively conducting a clearance of WWII era practice bombs came across a metallic object. Despite warnings put out by the USACE and other site officials not to touch or handle any metallic items found, the contractor picked the item up. After picking the item up, he reportedly attempted to scrap the dirt off of it. However, much to the contractor's surprise, the item began to burn letting off smoke in the process. The contractor then reportedly dropped the item on the ground and covered it up in an effort to extinguish it. When the item continued to smoke, the man called 911. The Fire Department responded and properly extinguished the burning item. Authorities later determined that the metallic item in question was an igniter from a WWII era 4-pound practice incendiary bomb that contained white phosphorus (WP). |
WP is a filler used in munitions that burns when exposed to air. It is commonly found in smoke rounds as it produces a think white smoke cloud as it burns. A likely scenario is that when the contractor handled the item and attempted to scrap it off, he exposed the remaining WP inside the item to the air, which then caused it to burn. The man was very fortunate that he was not seriously injured during the incident. |

Explosive Incident Occurs at Metal Recycling FacilityRaleigh, North Carolina - Two workers at the Raleigh Metal Processors Plant were injured when an explosive incident occurred during a scrap metal recycling process. The metal recycling facility is set up to process munitions debris (i.e. non hazardous items) but it appears that some hazardous munitions items somehow got mixed in with the scrap that was being processed. It is unknown at this time exactly what type of munition or explosive configuration caused the incident. Authorities received assistance from the EOD unit based out of Fort Bragg to survey the metal recycling facility for additional explosively configured devices and MPPEH. The EOD unit reportedly found other items that potentially presented an explosive hazard that had to be safely detonated on site in a series of controlled demolition shots. Nearby neighbors were evacuated and streets were closed during the detonations. The incident sparked an in depth investigation by local Authorities, the FBI, and the BATF. To date, several men have been detained for questioning in connection to the incident after a search of their property resulted in live projectiles and potential MPPEH being recovered. Customs and Immigration officials are involved with the investigation of the individuals detained. |

Colorado Gets Tough on Development at the Former Lowry RangeDenver, Colorado - Colorado law makers are debating a Bill introduced in the State Senate regarding the real property associated with the Former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range located in Arapahoe County. The Bill, which can be downloaded from the UXOInfo.com website using the link below, basically adds two requirements to land suspected of containing UXO and other environmental contamination associated with the Former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range. The first requirement is a restriction on real property development until all remedial actions governing the site are met or when the state receives sufficient funds from the Federal Government to pay for the costs of complying with all such remedial decisions. The second requirement of the Bill would require a disclosure notification be provided for the purchase and sale of residential real property that is located on the site of the Former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range. Gardening Turns Up Grenade |
Plymouth, United Kingdom - a man digging in his garden uncovered a strange metallic item. Unsure what the item was, the man called a neighbor who had some military experience to exam it. The neighbor looked at the item and suspected that it was an old hand grenade. The homeowner then called the police who sent a bomb disposal squad over to investigate further. The responding bomb disposal unit identified the item as a live WWI era hand grenade. The hand grenade (shown right) was safely removed from the property and properly disposed of by the bomb disposal squad without incident. |

A Royal Bomb Disposal EventLincolnshire, United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth got the opportunity to detonate ordnance during her visit to Royal Air Force (RAF) bombing range Holbeach. The range located in eastern United Kingdom is used by RAF and other NATO aircraft for practice bombing and training. The Queen originally planned the visit to RAF Holbeach to meet the then 62-year old manager of the range who was also a RAF squadron leader. Unfortunately, the RAF range manager did not have the opportunity to meet the Queen as he lost his life to cancer last December. The Queen however kept her promise to visit the range and was joined by the former range manager's wife and children for a tour of the facility. The Queen was treated to a practice bombing and aerial gunnery demonstration. Following the demonstration, the Queen was given the opportunity to initiate the explosive charge set in place to dispose of the practice bombs. |

What Not To Do With UXO
Boy Finds Old Grenade, Father Transports It in SUV20 February 2008Pace, Florida a group of young boys out treasure hunting with a metal detector in a field found more than just some old coins and construction debris. What the boys uncovered was a live WWII era hand grenade. The 8-year old who initially discovered the grenade decided to take it home with him. Several other boys followed him home. Just as the boys were reportedly about to put the grenade in a bucket of water, the boy's father drove up. Alarmed over the grenade, the father took it from the boys and decided that it was best to drive it out of the neighborhood. The father then drove slowly out of the neighborhood holding the grenade outside the window of his SUV. After a short ride, the man reportedly decided that it would be much safer to just pull over, place the grenade on the ground, and call authorities. The local police responded and called the Air Force EOD unit from nearby Hurlburt Field in for technical support. EOD responded and took possession of the grenade and safely disposed of it with incident or injury. Note - it is not advised or recommended for untrained civilians to move and/or transport munitions in any condition. |
UXO E-Newsletter Correction
An observant UXO E-Newsletter reader pointed out a discrepancy in last month's Munition of the Month - the "U.S. 3.5 Inch Practice M29A2 Rocket". John Bastien, a Canadian Forces Ammunition Technician holding the rank of WO, correctly identified that the image that was posted last month was that of an inert display version of a live 3.5 Inch Rocket and not an actual 3.5 Inch Practice Rocket round. The main identification feature that was used to make this determination was the bore-riding pin. The bore-riding pin of a live round is square. A picture of a live fuze is shown in the image below (left image) next to a picture of a practice fuze (right image). Another important feature to note is the live fuze has a screw fitting on same side as bore-riding pin. The color of the munition is another identification feature that can be used to help identify the rocket type. In the case of 3.5 rockets (and other ordnance as well),practice warheads are light blue, high explosive rounds are olive drab with yellow markings, and WP filled rockets are gray with yellow band. UXOInfo.com certainly apologizes for the oversight and also appreciates those readers like John who take the time to help us make it right. For this month's Munition of the Month, UXOInfo.com decided to feature the live or high explosive version of the 3.5 inch rocket (see below). |

The complete round of the 3.5 inch M28A2 HEAT rocket consists of a warhead, fuze, motor, nozzle, and fin assembly. The warhead contains the high explosive (HE) Comp B filler and has a conical shape that tapers from a maximum diameter of 3.5 inches down to 2 inches at the rear. The warhead contains an internal cone, which shapes the explosive charge. The rear of the warhead is threaded internally for attachment to the base detonating fuze. The "square shaped" bore-riding pin prevents the rocket from arming during shipping and handling. The rocket motor is loaded with 12 grains of M7 propellant powder. |
