General Area: , IN

Site Type/Program: MMRP - Army

Location:

Brief History: Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG), a 55,265 acre facility was established December 1940, fired its first round 5 months later, and operated until 1995. JPG's primary mission was to perform production and post-production tests of conventional ammunition components and other ordnance items and conduct tests of propellant ammunition/weapons systems and components for the U.S. Army.

Range / Site Description: A 51,000 acre parcel known as the area north of the firing line is known or suspected to contain UXO. This area is not slated for re-development under BRAC but several Government organizations, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Indiana Air National Guard have entered into Memorandums of Agreement with the Army to access the area and help ensure a balanced use of the land and maintenance of the natural resources and cultural resources.

Associated Munitions: JPG served as a proving grounds for almost 55 years and just about every type of munitions within the Army inventory including test and experimental munitions have been deployed on the installation at one time or another. The Army also test fired DU munitions from 1941 to 1994 including the test firing of tank penetrator rounds containing DU under a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) License, Number SUB-1435.
