UXO Site selected: Williams Field Range #3, AZ

Location: The former Williams Field Bomb Target Range #3 is located approximately 5 miles southeast of Florence Junction, Arizona in Pinal County. The site consisted of 640 acres and is located in the SE¼ of Section 13, the SW¼ of Section 24, the NE¼ of Section 35, and the NW¼ of Section 36, all in Township 2 South, Range 10 East.

Brief History: The site was established as a practice bombing range in support of Williams Field in Higley, Arizona. Historical documents and evidence on the site indicate that M38A2 practice bombs were used. Planned improvements consisted of a road, a night target, a target marker, and fencing. Known improvements consisted of aiming circles and a target structure. The target was marked with several aiming circles, the largest of which was 1000' diameter. There was a wood structure at the target center, most likely a wooden pyramid and a large amount of practice bomb debris within the aiming circles. There is practice bomb debris widely scattered outside the aiming circles. The area inside the aiming circle is 18 acres.

Range / Site Description:

Associated Munitions: M38A2 practice bombs.

Activities Completed: The Archives Search Report (ASR) for Williams Field Bomb Target Range #3 was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, in June 1998.

Issues: The Huntsville Center Technical Advisory Group met and discussed this ASR on 12 January 1999 and determined EE/CA for the entire site as confirmed debris from M38-series practice bombs were encountered by the SI Team during their inspection of this FUDS.
