UXO Site selected: Pinellas Practice Bombing Range, FL

Location: The former Pinellas Practice Bombing Range is located within the city limits of Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida. The site consists of 640 acres and is fully developed with golf courses and residential areas. The site is densely populated and is comprised of 1,011 parcels. The target center is located on the present day Countryside Golf Course and adjacent private dwellings (see plate 3). None of the original buildings, towers, fences, etc., from the World War II era exist on the present day site. The target center is no longer discernible as such.

Brief History: The site was leased by the War Department in 1943, for use as a Practice Dive Bombing Range. The site was needed for combat units of the Third Air Force and was limited to practice type bombs. The site was maintained and used by Pinellas Army Airfield (AAF). Pinellas AAF was the home of The Third Fighter Command Gunnery School and the Third Fighter Command Instructor School. The Practice Range was operational from late 1943 to the end of World War II.
