UXO Site selected: Fort Laud Bomb Target 6, FL

General Area: Pembroke Pines, FL

Site Type/Program: FUDS

Location: The former Fort Lauderdale Bomb Target Site No. 6 consisted of approximately 640 acres of land situated in Broward County of southeastern Florida. Its location lay approximately 12 miles west of Hollywood, FL, on State Highway 820. The former target site is composed of the 640 acres of Section 16 in Township 51 South, Range 40 East of Broward County (Plate 1). The site currently encompasses considerable amounts of both the Grand Palms Golf Course and Country Club with its associated subdivisions and the Town Gate Subdivision. The United States Postal Service (USPS), South Florida Processing and Distribution Center; a few small commercial enterprises, and a small wooded area constitute the remainder of the site (Plate 3). The entire site has hundreds, if not thousands, of owners mostly comprising residential subdivisions.

Brief History: The former bomb target site was leased by the U.S. Government early in World War II, probably around mid to late 1942. The property was designated the Fort Lauderdale Bomb Target Site No. 6 and was used to train naval aviators stationed in southeastern Florida in the skills required for bombing operations.

Activities Completed: The Archives Search Report (ASR) for this site was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, in July 1996.

Issues: This area was scraped down to the bedrock and then back-filled. The muck that was removed was stored on the perimeter of this area. Several MK 23, 3 lb practice bombs were found in the soil berm of this area during the site inspection. The owner was notified and he could not wait for the Corps of Engineers to clean up the area so he had his Vice President of Construction, contact the Broward County Bomb Squad, and with their supervision, they had heavy equipment brought in and they spread out the muck pile searching for more MK 23s. Twenty additional practice bombs were found by visually watching as the equipment spread the dirt on 14 and 15 March 1996. Due to this method of sweeping, the potential for OE presence still existed. During the HNC Safety review of this ASR it was recommended that during the EE/CA for Area B, this pile of dirt be searched using a magnetometer, if it still existed, and if contaminated, include it in the EE/CA. On 23 September, during the Pre-TAG review, Richard Pike made contact with Rock Island District, who had just made contact with Mr. Atkinson, and found out that the complete pile of muck had been moved off-site to an unknown destination. The TAG recommends that this area be included in the EE/CA. It is recommended that institutional controls (in this case, a public awareness program) be implemented in this developed area.
