Location: The former Ft. Lauderdale Bomb Target No. 4, consists of approximately 640 acres of land utilized during World War II to train Navy pilots in dive bombing procedures. The site is located just south of the Dade-Broward County line on the edge of the Everglades, along State Route 997, approximately 2 miles southeast of the junction of this highway and U.S. Route 27. The general area may be characterized as generally level, swampy and covered by sawgrass. The ground level of the majority of the site is under 10 inches of water for 9 to 12 months of the year. Only the campground occupying a northern portion of the site is above water level for the entire year.

Brief History: The land comprising the Ft. Lauderdale Bomb Target No. 4 is believed to have been acquired by permit from the State of Florida. It was likely used by Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Naval Air Stations, and their satellite fields, as the site of practice dive bombing during the early months of the U.S. involvement in World War II (actual date unknown). However, no record of a formal agreement between these parties was found in the course of this archives search. No known improvements were evidently made to the site, with the exception of the concentric circles laid out to form the bomb target bull's eye. The property is believed to have been returned to the state by 1947, when the installations that the target supported were deactivated.

Activities Completed: The Archives Search Report for the former Fort Lauderdale Bomb Target #4 was completed in May 1996, by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District.

Issues: The areas will require draining throughout removal response operations, as the ground level is normally under 10 inches of water for 9 to 12 months of the year. The area is almost certainly the habitat of endangered species of fowl and other unspecified flora and fauna. The State Historical Preservation Office has indicated that this site may have archeological value.
