General Area: Middleburg, FL

Site Type/Program: FUDS

Location: The former Black Creek Bomb Target Range is located approximately 16 miles southwest of Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL. It is composed of 640 acres of level, mostly wooded land. Approximately one-third of the parcel is now owned by the St. Johns River Water Management District, with the remainder being owned by hundreds of individual landowners.

Brief History: The site was a former U.S. Navy practice bomb target range. Preparation of the site began in 1943. The Navy used the site until 1961, at which time it was released to the original lease holder, Jennings Artesian Farm and Land Company. The only improvements to the land included a circular target, an emergency landing strip, warning signs and fencing. AN MK 23, 3 pound practice bombs were the only rounds used for training on this FUDS.

Activities Completed: An Archives Search Report (ASR) for Black Creek Bomb Target Range was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, in April 1995.

Issues: The Huntsville Center Technical Advisory Group reviewed this ASR and determined that an EE/CA is required in Areas A and B since there was confirmed debris from AN MK 23-series practice bombs encountered by the SI Team during their inspection of these areas. Area C should also be an EE/CA as the potential for practice bomb residue is extremely high in this area. NOFA is recommended for Area D.

Other Information: Area A: EE/CA Area B: EE/CA Area C: EE/CA Area D: NOFA
