General Area: Brooksville, FL Site Type/Program: FUDS Location: The site is located in central Florida, approximately 40 miles northeast of Tampa, Florida. Within the former airfield, 2,513.2 acres, the War Department constructed a complete operational training facility for fighter pilots. The improvements consisted of runways, taxiways, aprons, roads, utilities, and infrastructure. Brief History: The former BAAF was constructed in 1943. It was an auxiliary airfield of MacDill Field when it was built and became an auxiliary airfield of Drew Field in October 1944. It is presently the Hernando County Airport and Industrial Park. In 1945 and 1946, the Army Chemical Warfare Service conducted CWM testing at the field. Both munitions and bulk chemical agents were stored and used at the site. According to the archive search report, almost all of the chemical munitions were removed by late 1946. Ownership of the site was transferred to the City of Brooksville in 1947. |
