UXO Site selected: S E OREGON GUNNERY RANGE, OR

General Area: Burns, OR

Site Type/Program: FUDS

Location: This former gunnery range is about 50 miles southeast of Burns, in Harney and Malheur Counties.

Brief History: The site consisted of 876,632 acres, acquired in 1942 and 1943. Improvements at the site consisted of an emergency landing strip and two residences near the landing strip. The site was declared excess in 1947 and the leases terminated. The site is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), although private individuals lease areas of the site for cattle grazing.

Range / Site Description: An investigation completed in August 1998 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers raised the suspicion that bombing had occurred at this site in addition to the designated air-to-air gunnery mission. The Corps did not find gunnery targets or bomb debris during the site investigation. Local residents are adamant that no bombing occurred. There were no bomb targets visible from aerial photographs. Therefore, the primary hazard may be spent and live .50-caliber munitions. The largest concentration of such munitions is near Coyote Lake.

Associated Munitions: .50 caliber small arms.
