Brief History:

1888 The installation was established as Camp Highwood on approximately 695 acres.

1943 A record indicates Fort Sheridan conducted chemical warfare training.

June 1979 The U.S. Army Technical Escort Unit (TEU) removed an M139 bomblet from an impact area.



Range / Site Description:

Fort Sheridan is located approximately 25 miles north of Chicago, Illinois, on approximately 695 acres.

Prior to its closure, Fort Sheridan was the operations base for Headquarters, Fourth Army, and the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. Fort Sheridan's missions included command and control of reserve units in seven midwestern states, recruiting functions for the Army, and support for the Army reserve units recruiting operations in the seven state area.

Associated Munitions: M139 bomblet removed by Tech Escort in 1979.

Activities Completed: Archival searches were conducted by the USACE.
