Location: The former Schilling AFB consisted of 4,134 acres located approximately 2 miles southwest of Salina, Kansas.

Brief History: installation began in May 1945 and on 23 December 1942, the bse was operational as Smoky Hill AAF. The base supported tarining for WWII pilots for bombing missions. In March 1957, the base was renamed Schilling AFB. The base closed in April 1967. The installtion occupied approximately 4,134 acres.The installtion occupied approximately 4,134 acres. After closing in 1967, the base was conveyed to the city of Salina for use as a municipal airport which is the current use of the property. The Gas Instructional Area is used for farming (sorghum and wheat).

Range / Site Description: Schilling AFB from conception until closure has two ammunition areas, one special weapons storage area, five skeet ranges (at various times), at least one toxic gas chamber, one toxic gas instructional building, one aircraft burning area, a target but, and a missile maintenance building. This database entry covers the Gas Instructional Area (137.8 acres) which includes a former gas instructoin building and decontamination area. Historical records indicate that an approximately 100-square yard area was used for decontamination exercises involving liquid mustard on both the ground and a building.

Associated Munitions: Potential for CAIS and Live Mustard Agent.

Activities Completed: An Archives Search Report (ASR) was completed in May 2003. A CWM Site Inspection (SI) was completed in December 2010.
