Location: The Camp Shelby Training Center occupies approximately 134,000 acres in southeastern Mississippi, about 10 miles south of Hattiesburg and approximately 90 miles south of Jackson.

Brief History:

July 1917 Camp Shelby was established on 132.397 acres as a training camp for the 38th Division.

1919 The Camp was abandoned.

1940s The installation was reactivated for World War II (WWII). Camp Shelby's mission was to train infantry divisions during WWII.

June 1950 The U.S. Army Technical Services Unit (TSU) excavated a drum of unknown contents.

9 December 1994 The Mississippi Military Department published a Record of Decision (ROD) for the Camp Shelby Environmental Impact Statement in the Federal Register.

Incidents have found everything from 3 inch Stokes to 105MM HE.



Range / Site Description: In June 1950, U.S. Army Technical Escort Unit discovered area marked Impact Area and Mustard Gas. A drum was found at a depth of 14 feet, recovered, punctured, and no evidence of toxic agents could be detected. The site is 3o by 30 feet at an unkown location.

Associated Munitions: One 55gallon drum, contents not specified

Activities Completed: Additional investigation of this site indicates no evidence that Camp Shelby has buried mustard-filled bombs or was a site where decontamination took place after World War II.
