General Area: Pacific Ocean, HI Site Type/Program: Sea Disposal (U.S.) Location: Located greater than 5 miles from Oahu. Brief History: The area was used as a sea disposal site for munitions following WWII. The water depths in the area are approximately 1,500 feet and the disposal area spans over 26 square miles. |

Range / Site Description: known items dumped at the site include: Mustard M47A2 100 lb Bombs - Qty 16,000 for a total NCAW of 598 tons. Mustard filled Stokes Mortar Each - Qty 12 for less than 1 NCAW ton. Mustard Total dumped = 598 NCAW tons. Conventional munitions are also suspected of being dumped at the site. Associated Munitions: CWM Munitions (H) Activities Completed: DoD has only released minimal data on the site in the Annual Reports to Congress on the disposal site. The University of Hawaii completed an investigation of the area using underwater remote vehicles (ROVs). The 3 year study began in 2007 and was completed in 2010 with the Final Report issued in June of 2010. The study included side-scan sonar and image (photography) surveys along with environmental sampling. Samples were analyzed for explosives, metals and chemical agents. A total of 94 sediment, 30 water, 16 fish, and 19 shrimp samples were collected and analyzed. Of these samples, there were no confirmed detections of explosives or chemical agents. There was one tentative identification of the mustard in a single sample which could not be confirmed in subsequent analyses. Issues: Other Information: The 2010 Investigative Study concluded that there were no adverse impacts to the local ecosystem and that the risk to human health from the consumption of fish and shrimp from the area are within EPA acceptable risk levels. |
