General Area: Vallejo, CA Site Type/Program: BRAC Location: Brief History: Mare Island was established by the Navy in 1854 and was closed under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program in April 1996. The Navy has identified various sites, both on and offshore, where past site uses make it possible that ordnance exists. Throughout Mare Island history, ordnance has been manufactured, maintained, subjected to quality control testing, stored, and loaded on and off ships and other forms of transportation. |
Range / Site Description: Associated Munitions: Activities Completed: PA, SI, RIFS - clearance on 850 acres with over 11,880 ordnance items removed to date and over 1,900 tons of range residue (scrap) removed to date. Issues: Underwater UXO at the site may make clearance difficult. Other Information: Complete removal action on remaining property. |
