General Area: Atlantic Ocean, DE Site Type/Program: Dredging & Beach Replenishment Sites Location: Brief History: A popular clamshell harvesting area contained munitions (including CWM) and munitions debris. Dredging operations resulted in munitions to be deposited onto residential driveways throughout the eastern shore of Maryland and Delaware. |

Range / Site Description: Clamshells are harvested and used as aggregate and for driveways on the eastern shore of Delaware. Munitions started to turn up on residential driveways. Several EOD responses were conducted to remove munitions and munitions debris. In one case, Air Force EOD responded to a projectile found on a residential driveway. EOD reportedly mis-identified the round and attempted to conduct an open detonation disposal shot on it. The 75mm round turned out to be a CWM mustard filled round. The resulting explosion caused the responding EOD technicians to receive mustard burns. Associated Munitions: Conventional and CWM munitions including 75mm Mustard filled projectiles. Activities Completed: The USACE Baltimore District conducted a response action which investigated 110 driveways, 1 FUDS, and 1stockpile. During the response action 330 UXO were recovered including 5 in Maryland; EOD Response to 105 of the UXO and the USACE responded to the other 225. The residential properties were organized into categories including high priority (level A) sites where 100% inspection occurred (39 properties) and level B (63 Driveways). Residents also reported UXO finds through 911 (31 responses). The USACE also screened a stockpile of clamshells at the DE processing plant and helped to install screens and to implement a UXO recognition process. Approximately 53 MEC recovered, including 2 CWM round Issues: Implemented screening system at the clamshell processing plant in Jan 05 to screen for ordnance. Other Information: Screens were installed at the clamshell processing plant and a community awareness campaign was launched. |
